Do you have any interesting stories?
what i think most people do not realize is that ellis island is more recent historically and was a portal to just a small portion of the immigrants who came to the U.S. my great great great grandfather as near as i can tell he came from ireland to nova scotia then to boston. i do know definitely he was irish and married in richmond, va. in aug of 1822 to a young woman from one of the first families to settle there. without the benefit of the later more meticulous records it makes it tough to know for certain where he entered and what his port of departure was. it does seem that he came here alone so as a young man of about 20 he left all his family and all he knew in ireland never to see or hear from any of them or the land he grew up in again. i think the earlier you came the harder it was because of the inability to travel and correspond. literally you left everything behind and went into the unknown. my children are 6th generation born in this country and we are native american so our connection to the U.S. is fascinating and extensive historically.
