Can you use the pens that you use with PDA's and Nintendo DS work with an iPhone or iTouch?

i tried to use my ds pen for the iphone to type in the text when messaging, and unfortunately it didnt work.. they probably sell special iphone pens out there.. since it has a special recognition or sumthing
