Why is temperature control important in the synthesis of methyl 3-nitrobenzoate from methyl benzoate?

Poly nitration is a potential side reaction. With too much heat you will put nitro groups in the 3 and 5 positions on the ring. This is even more of a possibility if the group on the ring is an activating group instead of a deactivating one.
